SUMMARY:Lullaby for the Grieving: How Poetry Came to Meet My Grief
DESCRIPTION:When I lost my father in 2021\, I did not know how to see myself or my life anymore. I was a stranger to myself. As a poet\, writing and reading had helped me find my way through other trials of life\, and this time\, although it was harder\, reading poetry and allowing myself to write about my grief and the myriad emotions that I experienced in it started to form something of a mirror so I could see myself again. In this session\, I’ll read some work from my newest collection\, Lullaby for the Grieving and the work of other poets who have been a needed mirror. I will also share some elements of craft and form which were useful to me in articulating my experience. We will spend time writing and/or generating ideas based upon a few simple prompts. \n—Ashley M. Jones \n  \nAshley M. Jones is Poet Laureate Emerita of Alabama (2022-2026). She is the first person of color and the youngest person in Alabama’s history to hold this position\, which was created in 1930. Jones is the author of four poetry collections\, most recently Lullaby for the Grieving. She is the author of the essay collection WHAT THE MIRROR SAID: THE NECESSITY OF BLACK WOMEN IN POETRY\, and she is the co-editor of WHAT THINGS COST: An Anthology for the People. Jones has earned fellowships and awards from many organizations\, including the SouthArts\, Academy of American Poets\, the Rona Jaffe Foundation\, and the Alabama State Council on the Arts. She was named the Southern Prize Finalist by SouthArts in September 2025. Her poems are published in many journals and publications\, including POETRY\, Academy of American Poets\, The Atlantic\, The Nation\, and The Oxford American\, and her work has been featured by outlets including PBS\, CNN\, The BBC\, Good Morning America\, ABC News\, and the New York Times. SUMMARY:Collaborative Music for Coping with Grief and Supporting Each Other
DESCRIPTION:are grieving. Music provides a space where we can explore and bring compassion to the entire spectrum of human experiences\, from pain to joy and everything in between. In this way\, music can normalize a variety of grief-related emotions and bring people together to support one another in a shared space\, while also honoring individual perceptions. One’s relationship with music may have changed after a loss\, and\, in this case\, new music without previous emotional associations may be a supportive resource.  \nIn this two-hour online program\, music therapist Molly Grace Hicks will begin with a music and meditation experience to help participants increase emotional awareness and come into the present moment. Participants will have the opportunity to share if and how their relationship to music has changed since their loss. Molly will introduce and teach several original songs on the topic of grief\, some of which contain space for participant collaboration. Participants will share ideas for lyrics to be added to the songs\, and Molly will incorporate these in real time. Molly will offer suggestions for how participants may use music as a resource for coping in their daily lives as they continue moving through the grief process. No previous musical experience is required to fully engage in this session! \nMolly Grace Hicks is a Board-Certified Music Therapist and a Fellow in Thanatology (the study of death\, dying and bereavement). Based in Philadelphia\, PA\, Molly is the founder of a private practice\, Connected Voice Creative Healing\, where she supports people who are experiencing grief and loss\, life transitions\, and spiritual struggles. Molly earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music therapy from Temple University. Previously\, she worked in hospice care for 16 years\, as a music therapist and bereavement coordinator. Molly regularly presents at professional conferences\, has authored journal articles and chapters in music therapy texts\, and co-developed a continuing education course to help music therapists better meet the spiritual needs of the individuals with whom they work.  \nMolly is also passionate about interfaith leadership and its intersections with grief and justice work. She has been co-leading a monthly interfaith music gathering called Song\, Silence & Sanctuary for the past 8 years\, and is a board member and presenter for the international organization Interfaith Alignment. Molly sings with the Interfaith Music Project of Philadelphia. Molly loves to write her own songs and poems\, and also enjoys creating collage and mixed media artwork. SUMMARY:The Mystery of Grief: Writing into the Loss
DESCRIPTION:When we lose loved ones\, writing can be a powerful tool for helping us remember them\, helping us re-encounter the world without them\, and helping us re-know ourselves as the loss transforms us. \nIn this two-hour online program\, Evermore Poet Laureate Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer will offer a few suggestions for writing. Together\, we will read poems about grief and discuss them. We will have chances to do our own writing\, there will be optional time for sharing what we wrote\, and we will have time to reflect on the effect writing has on us. \nThe event is scheduled in Eastern Time (ET).
